• “turnover declined, profit increased. As with some previous years, the timing and make up of fruit sales in particular, had a key influence on turnover. A low carry over of the previous season's crop (2023 harvest) into the new financial year and a higher carry over of the 2024 crop beyond the financial year end, reduced overall fruit turnover.”
• “Grapes suffered, along with the wider industry, from poor growing conditions and high disease pressure, resulting in a lower crop of poorer quality. Blackcurrants continue to be a core element of our business and have increased in contribution this year.”
• “The principal risk to the business remains the availability and cost of labour. Cost of labour has been increased significantly through changes to Employer's National Insurance contributions and an increase in the living wage rate significantly above inflation. Whilst there has been an extension to the Seasonal Workers Permits Scheme, there remains concern around the impact of ethical employment initiatives that may directly impact on the cost of sourcing labour. Attracting skilled workers remains a challenge. Wage cost inflation will challenge the viability of some enterprises and activities.”
