- “The global economic environment has been adversely affected by hostilities, not least the Russo/Ukraine war, and the current war in the Gulf, and sanctions affecting energy and financial markets. The novel and unpredictable tariff and trade strategies adopted in 2025 by the United States of America, alongside an abrasive approach to international affairs, have unsettled financial and other markets. Against this background the global and UK economies have experienced turbulence and disruption since the advent and recovery from the covid pandemic. Inflation, peaking in 2022 at 12%, remains above the UK target of 2% and continues to be a source of uncertainty. Finance costs rose, primarily to tackle inflation, and are only now falling in the UK with the UK base rate set at 3.75% on 31 December 2025. Against a background of low national economic growth and weak productivity, public finances remain another source of uncertainty with unease about the level of UK national debt and the levels of taxation needed to support that debt. Conditions are challenging for UK business, particularly in the property sector which depends on long term planning, steady management, and investor confidence. Current hostility in the Gulf is creating further political, financial and market stability including rising energy prices and potential energy shortages, adverse impact on inflation and interest rates.”
